A GARAGE has withdrawn an application to sell alcohol throughout the night.

Councillors had previously raised residents’ concerns after Snax 24 petrol station, on Wrexham Road, Johnstown, applied for a round-the-clock licence to sell alcohol and food.

The store can currently only sell alcohol and food until 11pm.

Previously Rhos Community Council members said 24 hour selling was not appropriate at the garage, saying it could cause problems for nearby houses.

One councillor said selling petrol and alcohol through the night was ‘a bad mix’.

At meeting of Wrexham Council’s licensing sub-committee, a compromise was agreed between the store owners and members of Rhos Community Council.

Bosses at the garage will change their application to include an extension to sell alcohol and hot food until midnight, with cold food being sold round-the-clock.

Ponciau councillor Paul Pemberton, who attended the meeting along with Pant councillor Kevin Hughes, members of North Wales Police and Johnstown residents, said the council and residents were ‘satisfied’ with the result of the meeting.

“We put forward our thoughts as a council and the concerns of residents, as it is a residential area and the sale of 24-hour alcohol would cause problems,” he said.

“The store owners were accommodating and when they suggested they would alter their application, the police said they would withdraw their objection and we agreed.

This is a good result for the community and we are happy with the resolution.”

Joss Thomas, Wrexham Council licensing officer, said the initial 24-hour alcohol application from Snax 24 was identical to an application submitted in 2011, which was rejected following similar concerns from the community.

The new application is set to be heard at a future licensing committee meeting.
