A FOOTBALLER hoping to win a new deal at Wrexham FC has apologised to fans about comments made in an ugly row on Twitter.

Earlier in the week Kevin Thornton locked horns with fans on the social networking site after he came in for criticism from some Reds’ followers.

He sparked fury from some Reds Twitter followers when he bit-back at critical fans, tweeting: “Haha Wrexham fans hammering me again I look at there pics and nearly get sick on my phone, #noteeth” and “Jeremy Kyle is the place for yous” in response to criticism he had been receiving online.

Now the former Republic of Ireland under-21 international, 27, has spoken to the Leader to explain his actions.

He said: “I was bantering with the fans as they were giving me stick, and didn’t mean to offend anyone. I was just fighting my corner.

“I can understand where the fans are coming from.

“They own the club, they have their opinions, right or wrong, and I respect that, but I’m not a dog.

“I’m a human being and I have feelings.

“If someone is giving it out to me and they expect me to take it, then I’ll give it them back and expect them to take it.

“That’s how it works where I’m from.”

He added: “I’ve enjoyed playing for the club and want to stay. A big part of that is the fans. Some of them have become close mates, and I’ve gone to their birthday parties and funerals.

“It’s just been one of those things. I’ll be back for pre-season and let my feet do the talking from now on.”

Initially, Thornton had sparked the controversy on Monday with the Jeremy Kyle post, which came in response to criticism he had been receiving about his value to the club from fans online.

He continued to respond to supporters’ jibes, posting: “Makes me laugh Wrexham fans hammering me 4 going out in the season yes I have got a life off the pitch, yous expect us 2 live a prison life.”

The talented midfielder has been blighted by injury problems in his time at The Racecourse and played only a handful of games last season, finishing the campaign on loan at Tamworth. The season before, he scored a crucial penalty in the FA Trophy final as the Reds triumphed at Wembley.

Although not offered a contract this summer, manager Kevin Wilkin has left the door open for Thornton to come back and train with the Reds pre-season.
