SCHOOLchildren will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the First World War by creating mosaics to lay in a village park.

Pupils at schools across Rhos and Johnstown are being encouraged to make the poppy-themed mosaics to mark the onset of The Great War in 1914, in a joint project with Ponciau Banks Park and Rhos Community Council.

A special ceremony will take place in the park later in the school summer term where the mosaics will be laid on the park and awards will be handed out.

Children from Ysgol Grango, Maes y Mynydd, I D Hooson, Johnstown, Morgan Clwyd and St Joseph’s schools are taking part, and are also being asked to write poetry to remember fallen heroes.

Pupils from Ysgol I D Hooson headed to the Ponciau Banks Park Centre this week to help create their mosaics ahead of the anniversary.

Wendy Jones, clerk of Rhos Community Council, said: “We feel projects like this enable the children to get involved with their local community and helps them realise the significance of World War One.

“Rhos and Johnstown have always tried extra hard when it comes to commemorating the war effort and this year will be no different."

Ponciau councillor Paul Pemberton said: “This is a great initiative between both the Ponciau Bank Park and the local schools and it is fantastic to get the kids involved with a scheme such as this.

“The children from Ysgol

I D Hooson came down this week and really enjoyed it and I think the same can be said for the other schools who are helping out. This is a proper community project and hopefully it will be a fitting anniversary to our fallen heroes.”
