AN EXECUTIVE board member who has been involved in local government since 1959 has stepped down.

At Wrexham Council’s annual general meeting last night, Cllr Bob Dutton resigned from his position on the executive board as lead member for environment but he will stay on as a councillor.

Cllr Dutton, who was chief executive of Wrexham Maelor Borough Council from 1988 to 1995, told the meeting he had “particularly enjoyed” his time as portfolio holder for the environment.

A replacement appointment to the executive board has yet to be made. A Wrexham Council spokesman said a decision would be made “in due course”.

One of Cllr Dutton’s last acts as an executive board member was to reverse a decision that would have seen wards across Wrexham receive only two grass cuts per year.

Independent Cllr Dutton, who represents Erddig, revealed earlier this week that, weather depending, each ward will now receive a minimum of four cuts in the 2014-15 financial year. But that is still half the number for 2013-14.

Wrexham Council had previously announced plans for a further £200,000 of cuts from its grass cutting budget for the 2015-16 financial year, but the decision was deferred at the council’s executive board meeting.

In a statement, Cllr Dutton said: “It was proposed to consider reviewing the number of cuts, but it is now intended that all areas will get a minimum of four cuts, dependent upon weather.”

Despite stepping down from the executive board, Cllr Dutton was nominated to replace Cllr Ian Roberts as the council’s Independent representative on the North Wales Police and Crime Panel.

At the executive board meeting last week, it was announced that fellow executive board member Cllr David Griffiths would be stepping down from his position to spend more time with his family.

And a replacement is also yet to be named for Cllr Griffiths, who was lead member for health and adult social care.
