FLINTSHIRE Council’s ceremonial leader raised more than £20,000 for good causes in her year in office.

Council chairman Carolyn Thomas announced that she has raised £20,888 for her three chosen charities: Nightingale House Hospice, Cancer Research UK and Mold Community Hospital X-ray appeal, during her 12 months in office.

The news came as Cllr Thomas handed over her chains to new chairman Glenys Diskin yesterday.

Cllr Diskin, who represents Mancot, will be assisted by Leeswood member, Cllr Ray Hughes, as vice-chairman.

Stepping down, Cllr Thomas said she had had a “fantastic” year in office.

The Treuddyn councillor said she had tried to promote the “wonderful” county of Flintshire and thanked council officers, staff and fellow colleagues.

Political leaders from all sides congratulated Cllr Thomas on her work over the year.

Leader of the council and Labour group leader Aaron Shotton said Cllr Thomas’ enthusiasm for the role had been “infectious and inspirational” and her recent charity parachute jump was an example of how she had gone above and beyond the call of duty.

Leader of the Independent Alliance group Mike Peers said Cllr Thomas’ enthusiasm had ‘shone through’. Liberal Democrat and Conservative group leaders, Robin Guest and Clive Carver, both added congratulations from their sides of the chamber.

Cllr Diskin said it was a “great honour and privilege” to take the role of council chairman and she would serve the communities of Flintshire with the best of her ability.

Cllr Diskin also nominated the British Heart Foundation and Prostate Cancer UK as her two chosen charities for her year in office.

Cllr Hughes added that he was “humbled and proud” to be in the role of vice-chairman and would do everything he could to “uphold the good name of Flintshire”.
