A CELEBRATION of hymns and beer proved to be a match made in heaven.

Members of St Peter’s Church in Holywell teamed up with the Royal Oak pub in Bryn Celyn for an evening of drink and song.

About 25 people were at the pub on Sunday evening to sing a selection of rousing hymns over a pint or two.

The Rev Aidan Coleman, the Vicar of Holywell, said: “The event was really just about getting the church out of the building and to get Christians out of the building and into the community.

“The church and pub are both places for community to happen and for people to meet, to have conversations and to be together.

“Traditionally, church and pub have been viewed as being in opposition to one another but both are places for people to get together.”

Mr Coleman said staff at the pub were very welcoming and he hoped similar events could take place in the future.

He said: “I think the tills at the pub were up and in terms of the church.

“I noticed that everyone was singing with great gusto and real joy.

“Sometimes I think we’re a bit too stymied in church.

“There are a lot of gut-rousing hymns and we sang most of them – and there was joy at getting away from that solemnity that is sometimes part of the church building.”

The singers tackled about 20 hymns at the event.

A range of other activities have been organised by the church for the coming weeks, with a cheese and wine evening taking place at the church tonight at 7pm.

On May 31, there will be a spring fair and plant sale at 11am.

The parish will also be running its annual pop-up charity shop on Holywell High Street from June 1-14.

Anyone wishing to donate items for sale at the shop have been asked to contact Mr Coleman on 01352 710010.
