THE Scout Association is to fully review the case of a paedophile jailed for abusing boys in North Wales.
Martyn Tucker, 68, of Sealand Road, Chester, was handed a 12-year prison sentence after the former scoutmaster admitted abusing boys in his care over a 10-year period in the 1960s and 70s.
During the hearing at Mold Law Courts last Tuesday, it emerged The Scout Association had been informed of the abuse taking place at the time of the offences, but despite taking statements from victims, never informed the police.
The court heard Tucker, who pleaded guilty to 26 sexual offences, had also worked for the former Delyn and Alyn and Deeside councils.
He abused his victims in locations including Pontybodkin in Flintshire, Wrexham and Llangollen while on scouting expeditions and in changing rooms during his time as a menswear manager in Whitchurch, Shropshire, where he was also assistant scoutmaster of the town’s scout troop.
Scout Association spokesman Simon Foster said: “The Scout Association is pleased that Martyn Tucker pleaded guilty to his crimes and has been suitably punished for his appalling actions.
“The safety of young people in our care is our number one priority.
“Following the conclusion of the court proceedings The Scout Association will now fully review this case from the 1970s to learn all possible lessons that it can.
“The Scout Association co-operated fully with the police in the case and as soon as they raised concerns about Tucker’s past behaviour we offered them unlimited and unrestricted access to our records.
“Tucker has not been a member of Scouting since the late 1970s
“The Scout Association carries out stringent vetting of all adults who work with young people and requires them to work to a strict code of practice outlined in the Young People First Code of Practice.”
At last week’s hearing Judge Niclas Parry also ordered Tucker to register as a sex offender for life and banned him from ever working with children again.
He told him the offences involved a grave betrayal of trust placed in him.
