A MUSICIAN inspired by teenage cancer fundraiser Stephen Sutton and the brother he lost 20 years ago has recorded a charity song.
Nik Turner’s brother Gareth died in 1994, aged 21, having been diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer at the age of 19.
But in the short time he had left, Gareth gained the support of many including Virgin boss Sir Richard Branson when he wrote a song – Flying – to raise money for Clatterbridge Hospital cancer ward facilities on the Wirral.
Nik, 30, of Hawarden, said his brother’s record was made four or five months before he died and “the sales were unbelievable”.
Now, following the inspirational story of 19-year-old Stephen Sutton from Burntwood in Staffordshire who raised more than £3.2m for the Teenage Cancer Trust before his death on Wednesday, Nik hopes his own record can continue his older brother and Stephen’s incredible efforts.
Mum Jackie Turner said Gareth and his band started raising money as 20 years ago he had been horrified the day room for patients had nothing but information videos about different forms of cancer and donated chairs with the photographs of people who had died.
“The nurses and doctors were wonderful but the place itself was awful,” she said.
“One of the first things Gareth wanted was an ice-cream maker to take away the tinny taste left after radiotherapy. He also bought films and anything else that was needed to make the hospital a home from home.”
Nik, who was 10 when his brother died, wrote Million to One in memory of Gareth who was told by doctors his cancer affected just one child in a million. “He was my biggest inspiration,” said Nik.
“I wrote it about two years ago but never did anything with it. Then I saw what Stephen had done and it was a no brainer. The hope is people will help us get one million plays. All proceeds raised will go to the Teenage Cancer Trust.”

Nik said it would be great if he could find a sponsor to help launch the track. “If we can get one or maybe two companies to get behind it, we can take it to a bigger audience. We just want to get as much money as we can for the trust.”
