THE Scout Association should be investigated to ensure allegations about its leaders do not remain ignored, an MP has said.

Alyn and Deeside MP Mark Tami has called for an investigation into the youth organisation to ensure allegations made against Scout leaders do not remain unheard.

His comments follow the prosecution of former assistant Scoutmaster Martyn Tucker.

Tucker, 68, of Sealand Road, Chester, was jailed for 12 years for 26 offences against boys in the 1960s and ‘70s.

Mold Crown Court heard how the Scouts knew about allegations made about Tucker's behaviour but had failed to act.

Mr Tami said: “They [the Scouts] should be looked in to in this case as there were concerns raise about Martyn Tucker many years ago but nothing appeared to be done about it.

“This seems to be a common theme in sex assault cases when allegations are made but seem to go ignored.

“This is not acceptable and I hope that the scouts can look in to this to ensure nothing like this ever happens again.”

Mr Tami has written to the Scout Association to register his concerns.

During his trial at Mold Crown Court on Tuesday, it was heard how Tucker abused Scouts when he was assistant Scoutmaster of the Whitchurch troop in Shropshire.

He also abused others while the manager of Foster’s menswear in the town, taking boys to the shop’s changing rooms.

Tucker took victims to Bristol and instructed them to indulge in sex acts with another unknown man.

While on a canoe weekend in Llangollen he was joined by an unknown primary school teacher who also indulged in sex acts with the scouts.

He would visit a farm at Pontybodkin in Flintshire, owned by a member of his family at the time, for outdoor activities but Tucker and the teacher abused scouts there.

Tucker, who worked for the former Alyn and Deeside and Delyn councils before being a legal executive dealing in social welfare issues for various Chester solicitors, admitted a total of 26 sexual offences.
