Ruabon's sporting needs given helping hand

THRIFTY bowling club members have agreed to develop the sporting needs of their fellow villagers.

Ruabon Community Council and the village bowling club have entered into a contract and the club will now run the village’s sports pavilion on behalf of the people of the area.

The chairman of Ruabon Sports Association, John Henry Davies, handed over the keys of the pavilion to Cllr Joan Lowe who accepted them on behalf of the community council.

The sports association was formed in 1994 with six trustees, but three later moved away, leaving three active trustees in recent years – John Davies, Graham Bithel and Colin Wright and the association’s honourary secretary, Robert Bennett.

The association’s main purpose was to fundraise, build the pavilion and then run it and provide sporting opportunities for the village. To kickstart the fundraising, the trustees had to guarantee initial match funding for the first £10,000.

The pavilion has now been handed over in tip-tip condition, completely redecorated, with solar panels, a refurbished kitchen, a new boiler, front entrance doors and French windows opening on to the bowling green.

The environmental upgrading of the building has not only been completed but the trustees were also able to provide the funding for solar panels for the village hall.

Ruabon Bowling Club members have received recognition from the sports association for all their hard work in ensuring the club’s success over the past eight years.

The green now has floodlighting, shelters for spectators and new pathways provided for them and the members will also take over the management of the pavilion in a lease agreement with the community council.

Upgrades of Ruabon community assets have saved many thousands of pounds immediately and, with reduced electricity costs from the solar panels, into the future.

Cllr Lowe, who also serves on Wrexham Council, thanked the trustees and honourary secretary for their commitment and dedicated service to the Ruabon community over the past 20 years.
