STAFF at a Wrexham primary school are running towards glory in order to raise funds for a new play area.
Teachers Julie Dhesi and Sarah Barkley, of Rhostyllen Primary School, are embarking on the 13.2 mile Chester Half-Marathon course on Sunday in a bid to help the school raise £1,500 to complete a new playground for the pupils.
The playground, of which phase one was completed last summer, will include a pirate ship, windmill and a sand and construction area once complete – with the running teachers hoping their efforts may take the school to its fundraising £7,500 target.
Mrs Dhesi, Rhostyllen deputy head who teaches pupils aged three to seven, said herself and Mrs Barkley - who teaches Year One pupils - were excited about taking part in the 7,000 runner event at the weekend.
“It should be good fun, although we’re apprehensive about running for that length of time,” she said.
“The children have been really supportive - boys in Year Five and Six have done a car wash to raise money and two girls in Year Four took part in a yard sale to raise money.
“We gave sponsor forms out to all the kids and the response from the children, parents, governers and fellow staff has been wonderful. We can’t thank them enough. Hopefully we can complete the race for them on Sunday.
“We’ve managed to get phase one of the play area built, but we really want to push on with the next phase and get it completed for the children.”
