A COMMUNITY has come together to ensure a village library is saved.
Residents in Gresford and Marford have formed the Gresford and District Library Company. It has and have received enough donations and pledges of support to be able to announce the official reopening of Gresford Community Library on Saturday.
The library, serving Gresford, Marford and Rossett, was closed in April as part of Wrexham Council cutbacks but reopened for business on May 6 on a part-time basis, three days per week.
A growing number of volunteers, now totalling 30, will receive full training in order to run the library on a community basis.
Gresford businesses have helped provide the group with donations in order to get the facility up and running, as well as an initial donation from Gresford Community Council.
Cllr Andrew Bailey, chairman of the new company, said: “This is a great victory for the community who did not wish to see the library close.
“I’m delighted we’ve been able to reopen and hopefully it’ll be a successful venture for the area.”
Following the reopening on May 6, the library is currently open on Tuesdays 2pm to 5pm, Fridays 10am to 7pm, and Saturdays 10am to 1pm.
The official opening will take place on Saturday at 11am, with author Katie Flynn on hand to cut the ribbon.
She said: “To lose a local library is akin to losing a vital limb of the community. I am full of praise for the efforts of the community here.”
Entry to the opening is free, the doors are open from 10am, refreshments are to be provided and all are welcome.
Company director Tim Dillon said: “We are very grateful to Gresford Community Council for their initial funding and to many local firms who have helped us in the few weeks we have been preparing for taking this on. Our aim is also to use our library as a niche community resource so if anyone has ideas please get in contact.”
In addition to looking at such ideas the company will be looking at sources of funding, areas of saving and possible development and if you have potential ideas or proposals please get in touch via email at Gresfordlibrary@hotmail.com.
