A MAN grew cannabis plants with a street value of £3,000 at his home after buying seeds online.

Police searched the home of Dave Metcalfe in Maple Drive, Acrefair, on December 28 last year and found two large plastic containers holding 300g of cannabis.

Officers also found £300 cash, digital scales and other drug-related items.

Metcalfe, 35, had researched online how to grow the drug and bought the seeds from an online retailer for £80.

His first attempt proved successful and produced 300g which was seized by officers.

A further attempt to grow more failed.

Metcalfe told police the cannabis was for personal use and the digital scales were used to work out how long it would last. The 300g would have lasted about five months but Metcalfe, who is unemployed, said he did not know how much it was worth because it was for personal use.

At Wrexham Magistrates Court yesterday, Metcalfe pleaded guilty to production and possession of a controlled class B drug.

Justine McVitie, defending, described him as an “irregular smoker” of cannabis.

She added: “Mobile phones were seized as part of the search, but nothing was found suggesting any involvement in drug dealing.

“He used to buy cannabis but found it of poor quality so he decided to grow his own. Nobody else was going to benefit from it.”

Sentencing, chairman of magistrates Lloyd Fitzhugh said: “Whatever the reason for this, it was an incredibly stupid thing to do.”

Mr Fitzhugh imposed a six-month community order with a drug rehabilitation requirement, as well as ordering Metcalfe to pay £80 costs and a £60 victim surcharge.

A forfeiture and destruction order was made for the cannabis and the equipment.
