A FORMER mayoress has celebrated her 106th birthday.

Minnie May Jones, originally from Gwersyllt, Wrexham, marked the occasion with her family.

She spent most of her life living in Llay and served as mayoress of Wrexham in 1974 when her husband Morgan Jones was the first mayor of Wrexham Maelor Borough Council.

She was actively involved in the role, attending functions and supporting her husband.

Forty years later, Mrs Jones marked her 106th birthday on Friday at the Park Lodge residential home in St Asaph.

Marion Rowley, Mrs Jones’ only daughter, said: “We had a little party for her that she enjoyed very much. She had cake and we sang happy birthday.

“Park Lodge have looked after her really well, that’s why she is 106. She has had good care.”

Mrs Jones was born in Gwersyllt and lived in Llay for most of her life before moving into the residential home.

She worked in a munitions factory during the war and was always active – learning to swim when she was aged 70.

Mrs Jones still enjoys playing card games with her friends in the home.

Mrs Rowley added: “My father was councillor for Llay and mum helped a lot with the different things that were around at the time.

“The family all came up for the party.”

Mrs Jones is a former member of the Llay Mother’s Union, and was involved with the Meals on Wheels service.

She is also a keen animal lover and has had many cats over the years.

Mrs Jones also has two grandchildren and a great granddaughter who all enjoyed spending time with her at the party.

Granddaughter Julia Gilmour said Mrs Jones hates losing, and it is her fighting spirit that keeps her fit and well, “along with the small tipple of brandy that she has always added in her tea, which she says is the secret to long life”.

“Let’s toast to another year.”
