Staff frustrated as Connah's Quay Library closes for two months

THE temporary closure of a town’s library has caused frustration among staff.

Connah’s Quay Library closed last week as work continues on the construction of the Flintshire Connects centre at the same site.

While the library is shut staff have been asked to either work at other libraries in the county or take unpaid leave.

The upgraded library will reopen in the Connects Centre on June 23, but workers said the service is being greatly missed, particularly by the elderly.

Jennie Eardley, 63, of Fieldside, Hawarden, who has worked at the library for 32 years, said: “We are disgusted there will be no library service available in Connah’s Quay for so long.

“Many of our borrowers will find it extremely difficult to travel to neighbouring libraries.

“A lot of elderly people rely on the library for a chat and to just read the papers.”

Mrs Eardley said the uncertainty surrounding the library and staff roles during the period of closure had also been frustrating.

“We were still packing boxes to move right up until the very last day and soon we could be sent across the county to work,” she added.

“It’s frustrating to be disrupted like this.”

Another staff member, who did not want to be named, said: “It’s frustrating for everyone, especially the borrowers. A lot of our users can’t get to other sites easily.

“We’re going to have to play each week by ear, I don’t know whether my long term future will be at the library.”

Flintshire Connects project manager Mel Evans said: “There have been some delays on site during the refurbishment work.

“These delays, however, were not major and have not affected the projected completion date of the project.”

Connah’s Quay councillor Ian Dunbar, who has championed the construction of the Connects Centre in the town from the inception of the project, said: “They’ve hit a snag with the water drainage system and they wanted to make sure everything is sealed on the roof.

“The site will be assessed on June 16 and opened to the public on June 23.

“It’s the staff’s perogative if they are considering leaving but the Connects centre has been wanted across the county.

“It may have upset some people, but we’ve tried to minimise the loss of service as much as we could.”

The Connects Centre, which is costing about £330,000, will also house a range of council services in Connah’s Quay, as well as regular surgeries with town police officers.

Well I'm not stepping into Connah's Quay library ever again! Most of the staff have been replaced! Disgusting! These were the librarians who worked for our local library for decades! These were the librarians who had known borrowers since they were tiny toddlers! These were the librarians who would know people by their first names and would go out their way to help people in the local community. The soul of Connah's Quay library is truly destroyed. The library should have stayed a library!
