Stage set for crowning glory - whoever lifts the trophy

It could be Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard’s dream coming true – or Manchester City skipper Vincent Kompany’s crowning moment.

But whoever lifts football’s Premier League trophy this weekend will be standing on a stage with a link to Flintshire.

Deeside trailer firm Ifor Williams Trailers will play a part in this year’s title presentation. It will deliver the equipment needed to stage the winners’ ceremony.

Staff will be on hand at Liverpool’s Anfield ground and at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium – ready to set up the stage for whichever team wins out in the final matches on Sunday.

Liverpool’s 3-3 draw at Crystal Palace on Monday means Manchester City are favourites to take the Premier League crown after an epic title race.

Andrew Reece-Jones, design engineering manager at Ifor Williams Trailers, is a Liverpool fan.

He said: “On a personal level it would be brilliant if Liverpool could clinch the title again after such a long time [24 years], but we are delighted our trailers are involved in the trophy presentation ceremony whoever wins the Premier League. May the best team win.”

John Barlow, boss of Ifor Williams’ Lancashire distributor, Barlow Trailers – which will handle the deliveries to the two stadiums – also supports the Anfield club and has been a season ticket holder there since 1987.

He hopes he will be pulling the trailer, packed with all the staging needed for the presentation, onto the Anfield turf in front of more than 45,000 fans and millions more watching on TV.

“At the end of both games, which are being played simultaneously, they will be pulled on to the centre of the pitch of whichever side wins the Barclays Premier League,” he said.

“The staging will then be very quickly erected ready for the presentation of the trophy and medals to the players.

“It will certainly be an honour if I get to play a small part in the presentation if Liverpool do win the title.

“I’ve certainly got my fingers crossed.”

Chelsea also have an outside chance of winning the title – depending on the result of City’s penultimate match at home to Aston Villa tonight.

If necessary, a stage will be in place at Cardiff City – where Chelsea play their final match – but that will be handled by a different company.
