THE Welsh Ambulance Service has admitted it is concerned over a delay in attending to an elderly man who had fallen.

An hour passed before an ambulance reached the casualty who fell in Llangollen, close to the scene of an unrelated incident.

An ambulance spokesman said: “We were called at about 4.45pm on Wednesday, April 30, to reports an elderly man had fallen on Castle Street in Llangollen.

“The call was categorised as serious but not life-threatening, and efforts were made to allocate a vehicle.

“When it was reported the man’s condition was worsening, the call was re-categorised as serious and life-threatening and an ambulance was dispatched immediately.

“The vehicle arrived in six minutes and the man was taken to Wrexham Maelor Hospital.

“At the time of this call, crews were in attendance at a serious incident on nearby Regent Street in Llangollen and were required to maintain a presence at the scene, where there were concerns for a man’s safety.

“The service was also dealing with significant handover delays at hospitals in the region, which reduced the availability of our crews and vehicles and impacted on our ability to respond to calls in a timely manner.

“We are concerned there was a delay in our response to this call and would invite the patient or his family to contact us to discuss this case in further detail should they wish to do so.”
