A 66-YEAR-old man has died following a collision at a notorious accident blackspot.

Stephen Llewellyn Chilton was killed near road bends on the A541 in Pontblyddyn at about 10.20pm on Wednesday – the third fatality on that road in the last two years.

Mr Chilton, who ran the Alyn Bank Riding School in Pontblyddyn with his family, was pronounced dead at the scene.

His green Peugeot 306 was in collision with a Land Rover Discovery on the road between Mold and Wrexham.

Staff members at the Texaco petrol station in Pontblyddyn said they knew Mr Chilton well.

One staff member said: “He used to come in here all the time. It is such a shock.”

A resident, who said he saw the road blocked off not far from the bend while on his way to work in the early hours of yesterday, said: “The road is bad. They could do with reducing the speed limit further or put a speed camera in place.”

He added: “I was cycling to work at about 3am and all the road had been blocked off from the Corwen junction.

“I thought a tree must have fallen down. I was shocked when I heard it was a fatal crash.”

All the emergency services attended the scene and firefighters used equipment to cut free one casualty from a vehicle.

Police are appealing for witnesses following the fatal collision.

Inspector Steve Roberts, of North Wales Police, said: “If anyone witnessed the incident or the events leading up to it can they contact the Deeside Roads Policing unit on 101 quoting the reference number R063918.”

A second casualty was treated by paramedics but did not require hospital treatment.

As is now inevitably shown, all the recent work on that road was useless and pointless. All that needs to happen is for people to slow down at the end of the dual carriageway before they get to the sharp bends. How do you make people slow down? PUT A SPEED CAMERA THERE. It's probably one of the few places in Flintshire that actually warrants a camera, but, then again, I suppose it would be saving people's lives rather than making money, so not a priority.

Yet another pointless death on this stretch of road. Although the cause of this accident is not known, the recent changes have done nothing to reduce the speed of some drivers. Not sure what else they can do to the road, so Speed Cameras are the only solution. Get them installed asap!

As four of the previous six accidents at this spot involved either drink or drugs what would be the point of installing a safety camera? It would have no effect on drunks or druggies.
