A MAN redecorating his house started an uncontrollable fire in his front garden which intimidated neighbours.

Ian Wynn Jones, of Caego Terrace, Caego, Wrexham, was attempting to dispose of old household items by setting them on fire in his front garden on March 28.

Jones, 51, was in the process of redecorating his home at the time. He allowed a fire to grow to just feet away from a neighbour’s property and prevented firefighters from extinguishing the flames.

Jones was handed a 12-month conditional discharge when he appeared at Wrexham Magistrates Court yesterday.

Matthew Ellis, prosecuting, said officers were called to assist fire crews at the property just before noon on March 28.

Jones had been setting fire to an old mattress and a wooden door as he took things outside to dispose of.

When police attempted to intervene and asked Jones to stop, he swore at them and told them to “jog on”. The fire grew closer to a neighbouring property which intimidated residents, Mr Ellis said.

Jones prevented officers from tackling the flames which became uncontrollable.

After the fire was put out, emergency services were recalled to the scene an hour later as Jones had reignited the fire. Upon their rearrival, Jones waved around a petrol can and then ran into his home.

Officers were said to be concerned he could have possibly been exposed to petrol upon his person given his proximity to the fire.

Police were later able to arrest Jones from inside his property.

He admitted using threatening or abusive words or disorderly behaviour likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress.

Justine McVitie, defending, said Jones had lived at the home for 18 years and was in the process of renovating.

Jones was ordered to pay £85 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
