A POLICEMAN whose role has been to ensure football fans stay in line is now looking forward to watching games from the stands.

PC Peter Jones, who turns 50 this weekend and lives in Wrexham, has travelled to all Wrexham FC’s away games as fans’ liaison officer for the last five years.

He has now retired from the role with his last game being Saturday’s away trip to Forest Green Rovers.

PC Jones, who is also a keen fan of the Reds, said: “I’m looking forward to being able to go to games without having to keep my eyes on the crowd.

“I’ve been attending games at The Racecourse as part of the matchday squad since it was first organised in 1988, and since then have missed no more than four or five home games.

“I’ve enjoyed working together with so many people for the benefit of the club.”

As well as the friends he has made among supporters and staff at the club, PC Jones says some of his favourite memories in the role have occurred on the field.

He said: “I was right behind the goal when Mickey Thomas scored that free-kick against Arsenal in the FA Cup back in 1992. If you look at the footage of the game, you can see me in full uniform celebrating.

“I was at the original cup game we lost to Arsenal [in the 1978 FA Cup quarter finals] so that was a sweet moment.

“I also enjoyed the FA Trophy win at Wembley last year, it was a great day out.

“That was quite an operation, but working with the Metropolitan Police, everything went really smoothly.”

He added: “I also follow the Crusaders, so now I plan to watch both clubs as just a supporter.

“I really hope Wrexham can get back to the Football League where they belong.”
