HE’S used to giving the country’s top politicians a good grilling.

But it was deep frying on the menu when one of the BBC’s best known TV journalists popped into a Wrexham fish and chip shop to lend a helping hand.

BBC political editor Nick Robinson, best known for his regular political broadcasts from the steps of Number 10 Downing Street, dropped into Eddies Fish & Chips Restaurant, Pen-y-Bryn.

While behind the counter, Mr Robinson was filmed asking the people of Wrexham what they thought about the current economic situation and whether the economy was showing signs of growth.

The feature was broadcast on the BBC news last night.

Mr Robinson also had a go cooking up some of the restaurants award-winning dishes and so impressed was owner Eddie Haftavani he said he would take him on as staff in a heartbeat.

“If Nick ever leaves TV I’m sure there would always be a job for him here,” he said.

Mr Haftavani, who has owned the shop since 1986 with wife Abbie, said he also hoped the show would “help put Wrexham on the map”.

“It was great to welcome Nick for the day and he is quite a nice chap”, he said.

“When they contacted us and asked if the BBC could film in our shop I was delighted and proud to be running a shop in Wrexham, and hopefully it will help put the town on the map.

“It was a nice day and I just left it all up to the staff, it was a nice reward for their hard work to get on TV.”

Mr Haftavani, 55, said Mr Robinson thoroughly enjoyed sampling the fish and chips.

“What do you think? Of course he enjoyed our food,” he said.
