A YOUNG man who agreed to pay off a drugs debt by minding drugs for his supplier has been jailed for three and a half years.

Thomas Nathan Edwards, 19, of Moreton Avenue in Johnstown, Wrexham, was told by a crown court judge that by acting as he did, he was keeping the police one step away from the serious supplier.

Mold Crown Court was told that Edwards was arrested for an unrelated matter and a house in Heol Hafod, Johnstown, was searched.

Police found heroin, methadrone, cannabis and amphetamine with an approximate value of £17,000.

Judge Niclas Parry told him that he was ‘a vital cog’ in supply of a very large amount of drugs.

“What makes your involvement truly serious is you are keeping the police one step away from those are really seriously involved. That is why they turn to people like you not only to mind the drugs but to protect themselves.”

The defendant had done the same thing before and had ‘a shocking record’.

Jonathan Austin, prosecuting, said that in his basis of plea the defendant told how he was holding the heroin and amphetamine for a person who had supplied them to him.

Edwards admitted possessing drugs and possessing drugs with intent to supply and defending barrister Andrew Green said he accepted that they were very serious offences.

“He is at a point in his life where he needs to learn the lesson that the cycle of crime and punishment means if he does not change he will spend the best years of his life in custody,” he said.

Edwards was ashamed of his involvement.

He became involved through his own drugs habit.

Edwards got into debt, was told to look after the stuff by his supplier and he had done so.

On his release he wanted to be a proper father to his son.
