A DOZEN friends and family of a teenager who lost a tragic battle with cancer have had tattoos in her memory.

Grieving mother Tammy Forward is among the 12 who have had the moving body art to remember brave Nicole Powell, 19, of Caia Park.

Nicole died in her mother’s arms in the early hours of Sunday, April 6,  three weeks after being told she had incurable adrenal cancer which had spread through her body.

About 400 people gathered at St Giles’ Church, dressed in bright clothing, to pay their final respects to Nicole and celebrate her life.

And now her mum Mrs Forward has revealed the moving artistic tribute to her daughter. Each tattoo is of a butterfly with the cancer ribbon through it.

“The tattoos were an idea we had and we all had them done just before the funeral,” Mrs Forward said.

“Even Nicole’s grandparents have had them and some of her friends, which is a lovely thing to do.”

She added the response from the people of Wrexham to her daughter’s tragic death has been “overwhelming”.

She said she was “still expecting Nicole to walk through the door”, and expressed her thanks to Nicole’s friends and family for coming out in force to celebrate her life.

“It was a very fitting send off and the turnout was amazing,” she said.

“It was absolutely unbelievable to see so many people line the streets and in the church for Nicole, all dressed in bright colours as we’d asked. It was overwhelming for all of us and I’d like to give a massive thanks to all her family and friends for their support.

“The response would have made Nicole proud. It is something I never thought I would have to do and it has still not sunk in yet.

“I’m still expecting Nicole to walk through the door or to get a text from her.

“It’s still very raw and we’re trying to get our heads around it.”

Mrs Forward said more than £1,000 was raised through donations at the funeral, which will go towards The Christie Cancer Research Centre in Manchester.
