VANDALISM at a village cemetery has been branded as “extremely disrespectful”.
Cllr Joan Lowe, county councillor for Ruabon, has hit out at incidents in which chains locking the village cemetery have been cut and gates lifted off their hinges.
She said: “It has happened twice in a week, it’s extremely disrespectful and incredibly frustrating.
“The community council have spent a fair bit of money over the last two years, extending the cemetery after receiving planning permission.
“It was made very secure. They have put fences and gates up, and it is locked, but chains have been cut and gates lifted off their hinges and just thrown around the cemetery.
“The community council employs a groundsman and the cemetery is under their control, so it will cost a fair bit of expense to the people of Ruabon to have to put right. The PCSOs in the area are aware of what’s going on, but if anyone visiting the cemetery does see anything, we ask them to please contact the police.”
Community councillor Bill Smith added: “The chains were cut last Monday night, but repaired on Tuesday, then on Wednesday night they were cut again, obviously with a steel saw as it’s the only thing strong enough to do it.
“One gate has been completely destroyed, while others have been taken off their hinges with the help of a tractor by the looks of the tyre marks that have been left.
“Someone has obviously planned this.”
Cllr Smith was also relieved the damage has so far only reached the newest part of the cemetery.
He said: “The gates that have been chucked around, luckily, did not reach any of the gravestones, but are on the field where we have extended.
“The people of Ruabon are super sensitive about the cemetery and treat it with respect, which is why we had this work done to secure it.
“There will be many people in the village who are very upset about this.”
He added: “We’re going to have to work out how much it will cost us to repair it.
“Apart from the expense of having to keep on replacing the locks and the gate, it’s really quite an upsetting and disrespectful thing for someone to do.”
