ONE of the oldest inns in the area is about to celebrate its first birthday as a community pub.
The Tyn-Y-Capel in Minera, Wrexham, which dates back to the 13th century with records going back as far as 1250 AD, will mark the anniversary over the forthcoming Easter weekend.
In its first year since reopening as a community pub, it has proved to be a huge success.
Its closure in February 2011 also came to national attention when it was featured in a Channel 4 show with TV chef Heston Blumenthal.
It was re-opened as a community- run pub in April 2013 after more than 100 local people purchased shares in the venture.
Not only was the much-loved pub saved by the community but it is also run by the local community, with a combination of volunteers and paid staff proving to be a winning formula.
The food produced by the restaurant is locally sourced and the Tyn-Y-Capel offers a range of locally produced real ales.
Christine Grant, of Minera Community Ltd which runs the pub, said: “We had a good vision of it becoming what it is.
“We have great involvement from the local community but it is run as a business.
“The darts team is back and the Sunday quiz team is back after they previously didn’t have anywhere to go. We’ve managed to do lot of community based things. We’ve had christenings and weddings here, which we are looking to have more of in the future.
“We’ve seen quite a lot of community pubs open up around the country, and people get in touch with us looking for pointers. It’s definitely the way to go.
“We’re inviting people to come and share in the celebrations.”
Mrs Grant added the pub is still looking for more people from the community to get involved.
She said: “We could do with a wider range of people to call on whether it be working at the bar, waiting on or even helping with the gardening.
“Some of our younger volunteers have gone on to get paid work but it would suit retired people or anyone with a few hours to spare.”
Tyn-Y-Capel celebrates its first birthday over Easter with various events including a gig by band Freeway on Saturday night, April 19.
There will also be a special Easter Sunday roast lunch and a celebratory breakfast on Bank Holiday Monday, April 21.
