TWO roller derby skaters are heading for the World Cup after being selected to compete for Wales in the USA.
Cat Davies of North Wales Roller Derby, based in Deeside, and Wirral Whipitere Liz Gibson, who lives in Shotton, have both been picked for the Wales squad heading to the USA to take part in the 30-team tournament in December.
Cat, from Denbigh, formed part of the Deeside-based team that celebrated a heartstopping 157-156 win over the Manchester Roller Derby Furies at the weekend.
Both girls are now getting their skates on ready for their trans-atlantic trip which will see them represent their country in Dallas against the global elite in the ‘Blood and Thunder’ Roller Derby World Cup.
“I’m nervous but really excited,” said 25-year-old Cat who skates under the nickname ‘Shedog’ and owns Denbigh’s ‘Cat’s Dogs’ dog grooming business.
“I was over the moon when I found out I’d made the squad.
“I couldn’t believe it at first – I had to re-read some emails a few times.
“There’s still a lot of hard work to be done and I’m going to learn so much in the next few weeks.”
The sport has rapidly been growing in popularity in the area due largely to the performances of the North Wales team who play their home ‘bouts’ at Deeside Leisure Centre.
The team has made an impressive start to its debut season in Europe’s largest roller derby league – the Heartland Series – with performances catching the eye of national coaches.
Support worker Liz, 23, was also selected following a series of rigorous try-outs under the gaze of selectors earlier this year.
She said: “Wales wanted to get a team together and I went for a couple of try-outs in Deeside and Cardiff.
“I was successful and pleased to be able to get involved.
“It’s really exciting to know we’ll be taking on all the teams from across the world in Dallas.
“Hopefully, we can be successful. The American and English teams are very well established but hopefully we can beat a few teams along the way.”
The girls will, however, find themselves on opposing sides when North Wales Roller Derby face Wirral Whipiteres in July.
