A YOUNG singer is hitting the high notes after winning through to the regional finals of a national competition.
Courtney Charlesworth, who celebrated her 17th birthday last week, beat off thousands of entrants to reach the Manchester area finals of the Teen Star competition after wowing judges at a previous heat in Liverpool earlier this month.
The Buckley musician, who goes by her stage name of ‘Chutz’, said she is influenced by popstars like Beyonce, Rihanna and Taylor Swift as well as older songbirds like Etta James.
She is hoping her singing skills can help her win through to the national finals of the competition in London, when she again takes to the stage in pursuit of her dream on May 18.
“It would be a dream come true to win the competition,” Courtney said. “But even just having the experience of what I have done so far has been amazing.”
The Coleg Cambria student is already practising hard ahead of the regional event as she juggles her vocal talents with studying for A-levels in music, media and English language.
She is one of 8,000 teenagers to have entered the earliest stages of the competition, but only six have been selected for each of the regional finals in the late teens category.
Now all she has to do is figure out what to sing next time around.
Courtney, who impressed judges with her rendition of Christina Aguilera’s Something’s Got a Hold On Me during her successful last heat, said: “I do get nervous when I am up on stage, but then that all goes away and I just get lost in the song.
“It was a really good feeling to be chosen. As soon as I was told my face just lit up and I was so happy.
“But now I have to decide what I am going to sing next.”
Courtney has previously also entered street dance competitions and enjoys choreography.
She said the support she has been receiving from family and friends has been an important factor in keeping her confidence high.
“Loads of family and friends want to come to the regional finals and I have had a lot of support from them,” she added.
