The sky's the limit for Nannerch man, aged 83

MANY people celebrate their wedding anniversary with a bottle of wine or by going out for a nice meal.

But 83-year-old thrill-seeker David Snowdon-Jones marked his 27th anniversary with a 100mph zip-line challenge.

David, who was made an MBE for his services to charities in North-East Wales eight years ago and has climbed Moel Famau 1,500 times for good causes, took to Europe’s longest zip-wire to celebrate his union with wife Audrey.

But while Audrey may have been less than impressed with her husband’s decision to hit the heights while suspended on something akin to a mile-long washing line, David said he loved every minute high in the sky.

“I decided to do it in a moment of madness,” said David, who helps Audrey run the Cherry Pie Restaurant where they live in Melin y Fern, Nannerch.

“I had nothing to do on St David’s Day so I gave the place a call after watching Griff Rhys-Jones do it on the TV.

“My wife went a bit quiet so I knew she didn’t really approve, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

“I wanted to take the Welsh flag with me but I wasn’t allowed because of health and safety reasons. It was a thrilling experience and I have never done anything quite like it before.”

David, who was a friend of the late Record Breakers presenter Roy Castle, has been representing the Roy Castle Foundation for the last 20 years.

He raised more than £55,000 on charity walks, scaling Moel Famau 1,500 times between his 70th and 80th birthdays.

“When I started I was 7ft 7ins, but now I am only 5ft, 5ins,” David joked. “But I did have the pleasure of knowing Roy Castle.

“He gave his services to me to help charities and I have dedicated the rest of my life to his foundation.”

This year David has also pledged his support to St Kentigern Hospice and the Wales Air Ambulance.

Although he was not tackling the zip-wire at Penrhyn Quarry near Bethesda for charity, he said he will be raising money throughout the year with other feats.

“I am still excited by the thought of any challenge, even at my time of life,” he added.
