THE transfer of facilities, including play areas and bowling greens, from Wrexham Council to community councils is set to be completed.
Community councils across the county will take over the running of the facilities from April 1, if the local authority’s executive board vote through the proposals next Tuesday.
The proposals would see a number of children’s play areas taken over by their community council for 2014-15, while the upkeep of Cunliffe Bowling Green and Bellevue Park Bowling Greens will be transfered to their respective clubs.
Public toilets in Rhos and Overton will be taken over by their respective community councils.
However, five play areas are set for closure in the report, namely Shone’s Lane in Llay, Newtown play area in Gresford, Abbots Way in Bangor-on-Dee, The Lodge in Brymbo and the Senior Play Area based on Acton Park, due to their condition being poor quality.
The report, complied by Cllr Bob Dutton, highlights the need to meet savings of £45 million over the course of the next five years as to why the transfer of facilities is taking place. It also states the need to keep these facilities open in the future for each community.
Council leader Neil Rogers said the facilities were valued by people in communities, meaning community councils were prepared to support them.
Ponciau councillor Paul Pemberton, whose community council in Rhos has agreed to take on all the public facilities in their ward, said councils face a tough job to keep their facilities running.
“We have agreed to take on our facilities for the next year, but after that we will have to reassess the situation,” he said.
“These decisions have put great strain on the finances of community councils and it is a tough job for us all.
“We were served with an ultimatum by Wrexham Council to take on the facilities or face losing them, and now we’ve got to start planning for next year.”
