A POPULAR character from children’s television was the star of the show at an event to celebrate the opening of a new community resource centre.

Peppa Pig topped the bill at the new Hightown centre on Brynycabanau Road, Wrexham, where there was also a wide range of entertainment on offer, from face-painting and dance troops to a Great British Bake Off-style cake contest and storytime.

The centre, which is run by Wales and West Housing Association, was formally opened by Lesley Griffiths AM, and will offer classes and rooms for individuals, families and local businesses.

Ms Griffiths said: “Hightown can be proud of its new centre as the modern and multi-purpose design caters for the diverse needs of not just the local residents, but the wider Wrexham community.”

The Mayor, Cllr I. David Bithell, was also present at the ceremony.
About 300 people joined in the opening celebrations, which continued with a family fun day including a ‘cake-off’ with prizes of £50 in high street vouchers for the best decorated cakes.

The quality of the cakes were extremely high, making it a difficult challenge for judges Coleg Cambria pastry chef Rhiannon Ballinger, the Mayor and Mayoress, Cllr Bithell and his wife Virginia Bithell, who had more than 30 cakes to judge.

Cllr Hugh Jones, lead member for communities, partnerships and collaboration at Wrexham Council, said: “I’m delighted that Hightown and the wider Wrexham community will be able to enjoy this new, modern facility.

“Everyone I have spoken to has been very impressed with the new community centre and it is great to see people enjoying everything it has to offer.”

Anne Hinchey, chief executive of Wales and West Housing, said: “I’m delighted the community love the new centre.

“This is a fantastic facility that can be enjoyed by Wrexham residents at affordable prices in a prime location, which helps make a difference to the community when many centres are facing closure.”

Resident Paula Hack, chairman of the centre’s steering group, said: “I am really impressed with the centre and how spacious it is.

“I love the colours and the lighting – my family are enjoying the activities there.”
