HEARTFELT tributes have been paid to a well-known sub-postmaster who served his community all his life.
John-Pierce Margarson, 89, who ran Queensferry Post Office for more than 60 years, died on Monday after a short illness.
The father-of-three, who became a sub-postmaster in 1952, the year the Queen came to the throne, also ran Sandycroft Post Office for more than two decades.
His daughter Elizabeth, 51, paid tribute to him yesterday.
She said: “He is going to be very sorely missed.
“He served his community his whole life – I think he gave his life in service to others and he was someone who we used to go to for advice and he always tried to do the best he could.
“He had some major accomplishments in his life.”
Mr Margarson always had the Post Office in his blood – he was born above Sandycroft Post Office in 1924 where his father had been sub-postmaster for 25 years.
John’s grandfather had been a sub-postmaster as early as 1906, meaning the family’s involvement with the Post Office spans more than a century.
Mr Margarson, whose wife Margaret, 88, known as Peggy, also ran the Shotton Post Office branch for more than 45 years, was given an OBE in 1997 for his charity work.
Despite working for the Post Office for more than six decades, he still found time to serve in the army, was a Justice of the Peace for more than 30 years, and was also a councillor.
He also had three children - Elizabeth, Pamela, 65, and John, 64 - as well as six grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
His son John, an adventurous mariner who spent seven years sailing round the world, suffered serious injuries after a car crash with a lorry late last year.
He suffered serious leg, hip, arm and facial injuries in the crash.
John is still in recovery, but sister Elizabeth said he visited in a wheelchair to see his dad before he died.
Elizabeth said he was “a family man”, and they were all very proud of him.
Tributes to Mr Margarson were also paid by the Post Office.
A spokesman said: “It is with great sadness we can confirm John-Pierce Margarson, sub-postmaster at Queensferry Post Office sadly passed away on Monday.
“John was a much respected, hard-working and dedicated subpostmaster. With more than 60 years’ service, John was also one of the UK’s longest serving sub-postmasters.
“Everyone at the Post Office is saddened to hear the news and our thoughts are with John’s family and friends at this difficult time.”
