AN 18-YEAR-OLD motorsport star of the future has been snapped up by a top Formula One outfit.

Seb Morris from Marford, near Wrexham, has signed for Caterham F1’s Academy, and will now be supported by the British racing team through their young driver programme, along with five other young driving prodigies.

The teenage sensation will this year compete for Fortec Motorsport in the Formula Renault 2.0 Northern European Cup, having last year finished runner-up in the BRDC Formula Four Championship.

The scheme is similar to the one Lewis Hamilton joined at McLaren as a teenager and Seb described the Caterham deal as a “brilliant opportunity” to force his way into Formula One.

“To be picked for the driver programme at Caterham is pretty huge for me”, he said.

“These programmes are seen as a way to be fast-tracked into F1 and having the chance to follow someone like Lewis Hamilton really excites me.

“Obviously there is a long way to go and a lot of hard work to put in, but with Caterham’s help, expertise and sponsorship there’s no reason why it can’t happen.”

Seb’s motorsport career began in 2007 when he started racing karts aged 11 and has already raced around classic British tracks such as Donnington and Silverstone.

This year he will get the chance to race at world famous circuits including Spa, Monza and Germany’s Nurbergring, and Seb added he was eagerly anticipating plying his trade around the tracks that greats like Nikki Lauda, Aryton Senna and his namesake, Sebastian Vettel, have all won at.

“I can’t for the new season and the chance to race at the quickest tracks in the world will be really tough but I can’t wait for the challenge”, he said.

Mia Sharizman, head of Caterham Racing Academy, said: “Seb is an outstanding addition to our list of Academy drivers.

“His talent speaks for itself.

“He will be a strong contender for championship honours this season and, if, as we firmly believe he will, he fulfils his promise, the UK will have another serious motorsport talent to back.”
