A WELSH centre run by volunters in the centre of Wrexham has launched a £10,000 fundraising drive.

Saith Seren is a co-operative- run social enterprise based in the former Seven Stars pub on Chester Street.

The centre, which celebrated its second anniversary on Friday, has a café bar showcasing live music and local produce as well as offering upstairs rooms for community groups, businesses and Welsh lessons.

After its successful birthday celebrations, Marc Jones, chairman of the co-operative which runs the centre, said they hope to raise the money to make more people aware of the events which they hold, as well as carrying out general repairs.

Mr Jones, who also chairs Caia Park Community Council, said: “The money is for work that needs doing and for marketing because, although we’ve been here for two years, there are still people who don’t know what goes on.

“There are a range of events and  fundraisers which take place every week. Every Friday and Saturday we have live music and we do various charity events in the week.

“There are also repairs we’ve got to do that we want to do properly.”

Mr Jones said he believed the centre had done well to reach its second anniversary during the difficult economic climate and was looking forward to  bumper trade when the Six Nations starts on Saturday.

“Everything we do has been done off our own back. It’s run by volunteers who don’t take anything out. We also employ six people, part-time and full time.

“We haven’t got a rich sugar daddy and we don’t get any public funding. In that respect, I think there’s a parallel to Wrexham FC.

“I think the fact we’ve done it ourselves is actually more satisfying but this is where we’re looking for people to give us some help.

“There’s a lot of goodwill towards the Saith Seren and the place was absolutely bouncing on Friday night for our birthday celebrations. It was a  case of the whole community celebrating what we’ve achieved.”

The centre’s appeal to raise their £10,000 target runs until March 1.

Anyone who can help, is asked to visit the the centre’s website www.saithseren.org.uk where you can donate via PayPal or you can send a cheque made payable to ‘Canolfan Gymraeg Wrecsam’ to Saith Seren, 18 Chester St, Wrexham, LL13 8BG.
