Speeding fears after road in Saltney is fixed

THE removal of troublesome potholes has seen a busy road become a dangerous high-speed rat run, road safety advocates have warned.

Community leaders in Saltney are pleading for motorists to comply with the speed limit on Sandy Lane before a “major tragedy” happens.

Cllr Veronica Gay said one problem has been replaced with another after the filling in of potholes to smoothen the road surface led to a spike in dangerous speeding.

She fears a serious incident is inevitable if drivers continue to hare along the 30mph stretch.

One end of the lane is close to a school and Cllr Gay is pleading with drivers to slow down or face potentially grim consequences.

She said: “Speeding has been an issue for some time, but now the road has been resurfaced and the potholes have gone.

“I’m glad they are gone – they were a nightmare – but now it has opened it up as a wide road.

“It is a 30mph road with flashing lights, but people seem to ignore it. Something has to happen as the road is getting busier and busier.

“We want to do something before a major tragedy happens.

“A lot of children use the road to cross over to St David’s School. I personally think something terrible could happen if people are speeding along Sandy Lane.

“I’m hoping we can come out with a solution that isn’t too costly – I think we can put something in place that will control the speed.”

Cllr Bernie Attridge, Flintshire Council deputy leader, visited Saltney to look at the situation.

He said: “Cllr Gay asked me to attend the area. Over £60,000 has recently been spent on Sandy Lane to resurface it by the council. When there were pot holes, it slowed cars down.

“Now it’s flat, vehicles seem to be speeding, so Cllr Gay wanted to know what the council could do to deal with the issue.

“I’ll be asking officers to conduct traffic surveys there and look for funding to do something there if it is appropriate.”
