PROTEST trying to help save a leisure centre earmarked for closure will take place in the New Year.
Members of the public are being urged to turn out to give their support to the campaign to save Plas Madoc Leisure Centre in Acrefair. A petition against the closure proposal has so far attracted more than 800 signatures.
Organisers are asking people to protest with whistles, pots and pans to make noise. They are also urged to wear sports gear and bring their friends and children.
The protest will be held at the centre, starting at noon on Saturday, January 11. Details can be found on the Facebook page ‘Save Plas Madoc Leisure Centre.’
Wrexham Council, which faces budget savings targets of at least £45 million over the next five years, has outlined plans to build a leisure centre to replace Waterworld in the town centre by borrowing an estimated £11.9 million and closing Plas Madoc Leisure Centre.
Consultants have stated an estimated £857,000 will be saved by closing Plas Madoc, as well as closing gyms at Ysgol Clywedog and Queensway leisure centre and handing back dual use facilities to schools, with the expection of Ysgol Clywedog’s swimming pool.
