A SPECIAL preview screening of the latest film in the Hobbit trilogy took place at Clwyd Theatr Cymru in Mold last night.
Members of J.R.R Tolkien’s family attended a preview of the eagerly anticipated second film in director Peter Jackson’s Hobbit trilogy – The Hobbit – The Desolation of Smaug.
Mold joins a select group of locations around the world, including Los Angeles, Berlin and Wellington in New Zealand, to screen a preview of the film before the official release date.
The screening helped raise money for the MS Centre in Saltney, where Tolkien’s great grandson Mike has treatment for motor neurone disease.
Speaking before the screening Mike’s brother Royd, who arranged the event, said: “I wanted to do something local – I don’t live very far from Theatr Clwyd.
“It will be nice to get all the family around [Mike] and show support for him and also raise awareness of motor neurone disease, and also for a local MS centre in Flintshire which is a great place and a brilliant facility.
“I got in touch with Warner Bros. in Los Angeles and London and they said ‘fantastic’.
“I also got in touch with Peter Jackson and some of the actors and they have given me messages that will be played before the film.”
Royd said there would be about 10 members of the Tolkien family attending the special screening.
He added: “[Clwyd Theatr Cymru] have been brilliant and very supportive of doing this.
“I have known it for many years and it is a fantastic facility that has amazing shows and workshops.
“To help them in any way that might be possible is great.
“I’m a huge fan of Clwyd Theatr Cymru and its unique mix of world class drama, outstanding dance, music, comedy and cinema all under one roof – I’m thrilled to be able to bring this special preview screening here.”
The film will be released in the UK today and stars Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, Benedict Cumberbatch, Orlando Bloom and Stephen Fry.
