Praise for Holywell mum who turned in son

A MOTHER pushed to her wit’s end by her son’s behaviour has been praised by a judge after she reported him for burglary.

The woman had been the victim of her son’s offending in the past but when he was released from prison she allowed him to return and she supported him.

But after stealing from her, he was asked to leave and he began to sleep in a Landrover on the driveway where his mother provided him with food and clean clothes.

Mold Crown Court heard how one day she found a bag containing computers and electrical items inside the vehicle– and immediately informed the police.

It turned out that her son Luke Thomas Jones, 20, of no fixed abode but from Carmel in Holywell, had been responsible for three local burglaries.

Yesterday Jones – who had not long been released from an earlier youth custody sentence – received two-and-a-half years youth custody.

Judge Philip Hughes said the mother had behaved very responsibly, while under the natural instincts, to protect her son.

Sentencing Jones, he said much of the stolen property was recovered thanks to the actions of the defendant’s mother.

He was an intelligent young man who had been affected by drugs.

The judge said he must be a great disappointment to his mother who had stood by him and tried to help him but he had let her down “time and time again.”

“She is to be congratulated for being so long-standing in her support of you,” the judge told him.

He had not only let himself down but his mother as well.

But the judge said he had a duty to protect the public.

They were serious burglaries and one property had been targeted on two occasions.

Stolen items were worth several thousands of pounds.

Jones admitted burglary in Holywell, on November 4, a burglary at a shed at the same property on October 31 and a further burglary in Carmel on November 5.

Prosecuting barrister Simon Rogers said many of the items were recovered thanks to the actions of the defendant’s mother.

In March this year Jones had been jailed for 90 days for battery, and had previously served a two-year sentence for attempted robbery.

The court heard claims Jones had used MCAT, cocaine and cannabis but had been stealing to pay off a previous drugs debt after coming under pressure.

Mark Davies, defending, said it was a sad case where a mother had been forced to take the actions that she had, and not for the first time. She had been a victim of his offending previously.

The attempted robbery occurred at a pawn shop where he was trying to recover items he had stolen from his mother.

Jones was an intelligent young man with qualifications but he had been diagnosed with adult ADHD. He came from a good family but had come under the influence of drugs.

Help for his mental health problems had not been available  because he did not “tick all the boxes”, Mr Davies said.
