Wrexham FC versus Shrewsbury Town – in Kenya – in December?
It may sounds very strange but this derby match with a difference has been organised by a couple determined to improve the lives of children living in Kenyan capital Nairobi.
Bill Morris and his wife Lynn are jetting out to Kenya in December having raised cash and gathered football kits through their charity Kenyan Schools Project.
Mr and Mrs Morris were presented with a set of kits by both Wrexham FC and Shrewsbury Town FC at half time during recent home fixtures.
They have managed to organise a game on December 7 in Nairobi between two schools, who will be wearing the strips of the two market town teams.
The match has been arranged through Edward Mbugua, a football coach who works with slum children in the poverty hit Kenyan capital.
Since 2004 the couple, from Ellesmere, have raised more than £35,000 for Kenyan schools and donated everything from desks and stationary equipment to electricity and new classrooms.
They visit Kenya bi-annually and visit the schools and orphanages in Kenya where the money is going.
Mr Morris, 56, who works in Kraft’s Chirk factory, said: “It is a brilliant charity, a wonderful cause. Every piece of kit we can collect will go directly to the underprivileged children in Nairobi. It all began in 2004 when we were on holiday in Kenya. We went on a visit to Mkwakwani School and when we saw what the children had to put up with just to go and learn, we were so shocked.
“The children were sitting on concrete floors, barefoot and having to share pencils, paper and books. After seeing the school we then met the headmaster, Mr Pofu, to whom we promised we would try and raise some funds for them upon our return to the UK.
“The trip to the school really got to both of us and we could not stop thinking about the children.
“Nine years later and we have raised over £35,000.
“The Wrexham v Shrewsbury game in the heart of Africa should be a lot of fun and we are very thankful to both clubs for their continued support.”
Mr Morris is now appealing to the people of Wrexham to donate as many football kits as possible for Kenyan children before they fly out on December 5.
