THIEVES seized equipment valued at up to £40,000 in an overnight raid on a Wrexham tool hire garage.
HSS Hire on Hightown Road was targeted between 7pm on Monday and 4am yesterday.
A staff member arrived at work to discover a large blue and aluminium Hoddi lift elevator was missing from the back of a truck parked on the yard of the garage, which is surrounded by a 15ft fence.
After checking the rest of the equipment it was found eight orange and mauve HSS HGV straps, two strap shackles and a steel snatch box pulley winch were also missing.
Branch manager Phil Long said the business, which offers equipment and tools for hire and rental, had been hit by thieves more than 10 times during the past year.
“The bit of equipment in question isn’t exactly small so the first thing we did was to check it hadn’t been hired out,” said Mr Long. “When we realised it had gone we checked the box where the straps are kept and they were all empty.
“We’re not sure how they got in, but you’re talking between £30,000 and £40,000 worth of equipment stolen in total. In the past they’ve used wire cutters to get through the fence.”
Mr Long said HSS Hire will now be moving locations, partly due to the frequency of thefts.
He said: “We’ve been targeted 10, 11 or 12 times in the last 12 months. It seems these thieves are stealing to order.
“Unfortunately there’s not a lot we can do about it, just last week we had a generator stolen which was found in one of our neighbour’s garages.
“Obviously we’ve got a 15ft fence, but no fence is impenetrable. It’s costing us money as a business and it’s one of the reasons we’re moving to Wrexham Industrial Estate.
“It’s a shame as it’s a good town centre location.”
The serial number of the lift elevator which was stolen is 829612.
