A GP fined for careless driving after causing a cyclist to crash into her told a court she wished she could change places with the victim.
Dr Wendy Dyke, 54, said she accepted full responsibility and that it was the cyclist’s right of way – but wished her fine could go towards promoting cycling safety in North Wales.
At Flintshire Magistrates Court yesterday, Dr Dyke admitted driving her black Ford Focus without due care and attention on the B5070 Holyhead Road at Chirk, on June 13.
She was fined £400 with £125 costs.
Prosecutor Justin Espie played a video of the crash scene at the junction which showed the defendant turning right into Station Avenue, behind another car, and into the path of oncoming cyclist Robert William Davies.
“She failed to give way to the cyclist and collided with him,” he said.
Dr Dyke, who represented herself, told how she was a careful and experienced driver with a clean licence who drove 16,000 miles a year as part of her work as a GP, often in difficult road conditions.
She was not distracted or speeding, was glad that she was able to stop immediately and that serious injury was avoided.
The cyclist was wearing black and was against black railings and there had been a dark shadow from a badly sited tree on the pavement.
She said her view as she turned was also blocked by the car ahead of her.
She said she wished she had known the cyclist was there.
Once the impact occurred, she was able to use her medical skills to check the cyclist and raise the alarm and continually assess him.
“I wish I had been on the bike and that Mr Davies had been the car driver.
“I am younger and I would have recovered quicker,” she said.
While she appreciated it could not happen, she wished her fine could be used to promote cycling safety in the region.
Outside the court, Dr Dyke, a GP for 32 years who lives on Morda Road, Oswestry, stressed that she was not criticising the cyclist in any way.
It was his right of way and she hit him, because she did not see him, she said.
But high visibility arm bands made a big difference if cyclists were wearing black. If he had been wearing some, the accident might not have happened, she said.
