A DREAM that came true has led to 60 years of happy marriage for a couple.
Meirion and Joan Parry, of Heol Y Bryn, Penycae, yesterday celebrated their diamond wedding.
Before they began their 60-plus years relationship, Mrs Parry’s sister Jessie had a dream in which the pair got married.
She told Mr Parry of this and it acted as the romantic catalyst for the pair to get together and walk down the aisle.
“I remember her coming to me telling me she had this dream about me and her sister getting married,” said Mr Parry, 84.
“I asked her which of her sisters she meant and I was really pleased when she told me which one. That made me think about things.”
He duly asked his future wife out, with the pair enjoying walks together with romance quickly blossoming.
The pair worked at separate businesses in Llangollen and had been on friendly terms without knowing each other particularly well until this point.
They were married in September, 1953 at St Collen’s Parish Church, Llangollen, about a year after they had started going out together.
“I remember it being a lovely day and a very cold night,” said Mrs Parry, 85.
“After that we went to Wallasey for a week. When you look back at it the past 60 years has gone quickly. It has been a happy marriage for us both.
“I recall how we used to wave to each other and then my sister had that dream. She told him about the dream and it started from there.”
Since the late 1950s the couple have lived in the same house in Penycae, becoming familiar faces in the local community.
Reflecting on their six decades of married life, Mr Parry, a former Wrexham Lager worker, said: “It has been a happy time.
“Like all couples there are ups and downs and it was quite hard going at first as we weren’t well off.
The couple have three children, Nigel, Stephen and Helen. They also have eight grandchildren and two great-grandsons.
Nigel said: “It has been a very happy marriage for them. They absolutely adore their family.”
The couple received cards congratulating them on their diamond wedding and they will be joined by relatives at a celebration party tonight.
