NORTH Wales Police has recorded one of the largest decreases in Taser use throughout England and Wales.
Figures published by the Home Office this week show the use of stun guns by the region's police force had dropped by 27 per cent between 2009-10 and 2010-11 - the sixth greatest decline of the 43 forces operating in England and Wales.
The figures confirm officers from North Wales Police deployed Tasers 233 times over the two year period, the second smallest total among the four Wales-based forces where Gwent showed the highest level of usage, recording 411 instances during the same timespan.
National policing lead for Taser deputy chief constable Simon Chesterman said: "The percentage of occasions when the Taser is actually fired has not increased since its introduction in 2003.
"I believe this is evidence of the extensive and consistent training which the police in the UK have implemented.
"Officers are trained to use Taser to deal with violence or threats of violence and they are individually accountable in law for the amount of force they use."
Use of Tasers by North Wales Police fell from 138 in 2009-10 to 95 the following year.
However, the use of Tasers by police officers in the force had peaked over the two-year period between January-June 2010, when 74 deployments made the force the 12th highest user of the 43 England and Wales forces.
The figures show an overall increase in the use of the stun guns across Wales since the beginning of 2009 however, with police officers deploying them 99 times in the first six months of 2009 in comparison to 195 times over the last six months of 2011.
Across England and Wales as a whole, the use of Tasers rose from a combined 3,128 deployments across the 43 forces in 2009 to 6,649 in 2010 and 7,877 during 2011 in the figures published by the Home Office.
There have been a number of controversial cases involving use of the stun guns - including blind pensioner Colin Farmer who was hit with the weapon in Chorley, Lancashire, when an officer mistook his white stick for a Samurai sword.
