WALKING group members who have collectively covered more than two-and-a-half times the earth’s circumference have celebrated their 10th anniversary.
Buckley Walkabout, a group formed by Jim and Lyn Dyson, celebrated a decade of rambling with a ceremonial walk and party.
And, before up to 90 walkers took part in a stroll around Buckley, Jim reeled out a selection of staggering facts about the distances covered by the group over the years.
The stats, painstakingly recorded by Jim, include the total distance covered by members – which stands at 65,175 miles.
Jim said: “This number of miles was covered by a total of 21,651 walkers.
“Also, one of the original eight walkers (Margaret Astbury) still walks with us and in that time she has covered 953 miles on 640 walks.”
He added: “I worked as an engineer at British Aerospace so I’m used to keeping spread sheets. It’s something I like to do.
“At the end of the year we have a Christmas party and we let people know how many miles they’ve covered and who has done the most.”
Jim said former members and guests also attended the celebration after the walk, which was held at the Jubilee Court Community Centre, Buckley.
Lyn said when they formed in 2003 with eight members, the couple never thought the walking group would grow to such levels.
She said: “We never imagined that it would grow to this kind of size. We’re just happy that so many people are happy to walk around Buckley.
“It’s just like a social occassion and it’s helping with people’s health and also lets them be social.
“It gets people out of the house who otherwise wouldn’t really go out. It’s very rewarding and we’ve loved doing it.”
She said the group was mainly made up of people between the ages of 55-75, but that ages vary.
“In the school holidays, we get a lot of grandchildren. But it’s mainly the 55 to 75 age group.
“We did have one lady who was 90 but she had to stop for health reasons.”
The self-funded group welcomes new members. They meet at the Jubilee Court car park every Thursday at 9.45am and membership annual costs £4.
