A COMMUNITY’S residents must be kept informed about the progress of a major building development, a councillor says.
By a narrow margin Wrexham Council’s planning committee approved outline plans for a small supermarket and dozens of new homes on land opposite Bryn Gwenfro, Tanyfron, despite opposition in the community.
The plans are linked to funding being provided by applicant Brymbo Developments Ltd for a spine road through the Brymbo Steelworks site to connect Brymbo and Tanyfron.
Brymbo councillor Paul Rogers said he intends to hold a Brymbo Steelworks Liaison Committee meeting as soon as possible following the planning decision and believes it is important the group now meets more regularly.
He said: “The Brymbo Steelworks Liaison Committee was established to help oversee the reclamation and regeneration of the steelworks site involving local representatives so the community is kept informed of progress.
“Despite best intentions I am concerned the community has not been told the facts over the years in relation to the regeneration of the steelworks.
“Now outline planning permission has been granted for the next phases of development which will secure the development of the spine road it is vital the steelworks liaison committee meets regularly and keeps residents updated.”
There was opposition to the planning application, including that from a residents’ community group and Brymbo Community Council.
Their concerns include claims previous promises connected to the developments have not been met.
Cllr Rogers added: “I hope we can use the liaison committee to address any concerns raised by local residents but also look to see how we can take advantage of opportunities that may arise for the community from these developments.
“Wrexham Council’s planning committee has granted outline planning permission for the housing and supermarket and I would like to assure residents conditions exist to ensure the spine road is constructed and that any surplus is invested into on the site heritage area.
“There is a lot of work to do.
“However this is a major milestone for the regeneration of the Brymbo Steelworks site.”
