A MOTHER-OF-THREE “lost it” and spat in the face of a shop worker after one of her children left without paying for a chocolate bar.

Charlene Evans, of Fourth Avenue, Gwersyllt, admitted assaulting Susan Williams, a member of staff at the Lidl store in the town.

Justin Espie, prosecuting at Wrexham Magistrates Court said the 22-year-old was shopping with her young children and a friend on April 28.

He said: “The defendant was at the till when one of her children left the store with an item of confectionery that wasn’t paid for.

“Staff pointed it out and her friend offered to pay.

“But the defendant then became abusive and swore and spat at the victim in full view of other staff and customers.

“She returned later and banged on the window, leaving staff to feel concerned for their safety.”

The victim said she was left feeling ‘disgusted’ by what had happened.

When she was arrested Evans claimed staff had overreacted and she feared staff were going to attack her.

Ceri Evans, defending, said: “This is obviously a very unpleasant offence and I have advised her that it’s a very serious matter.

“She was last in trouble when she was 15 and is now 22 and a mother-of-three.

“One of her children had a confectionery bar and left the store.

“She has taken exception to how staff responded and agrees that she lost it. She said she’s over-protective of her children. She is a member of the travelling community but has lived at her address for a few years.”

Sentencing Evans to a two-and-a-half month curfew, district judge Andrew Shaw said: “Spitting in the face of someone is an extremely insulting and demeaning thing to do.”

The curfew means she must stay indoors between 8pm and 7am every day. She was also ordered to pay £75 compensation to Mrs Williams, £200 costs and a £60 victim surcharge.
