MORE than 1,000 single people are on the Flintshire Council waiting list for
The figure is in stark contrast to the three properties available to let just two weeks ago.
Figures released following a Freedom of Information request also show 88 transfer applicants on the Flintshire Council housing waiting lists are currently under-occupying and in need of one-bedroom properties.
And 169 couples are seeking one-bedroom abodes as the need for council homes far outweighs the number of such dwellings available in the county.
Flintshire Council has previously been hit by bills of £1million for bed and breakfast accommodation in an effort to house people.
Clare Budden, head of housing at Flintshire Council, said: “We recognise there is a real shortage of one bedroom properties across the county, a position similar to most counties across Wales and England.
“The council hopes it will be in a position to build homes itself in the future and in the meantime it supports housing associations and private developers to provide new homes to meet housing need across the county.
“This year 83 new flats are being developed in a number of different schemes across the county and people on Flintshire's housing registers will be prioritised for offers of these properties.”
The figures were published on the www.whatdotheyknow.com website in the wake of the FoI request.
They highlight the problems local authorities face in trying to find accommodation for people.
A total of 1,013 single people were reportedly looking to occupy one-bedroom abodes, according to the information from Flintshire Council on August 16.
Aside from the three available properties, three further one-bedroom council dwellings were under repair.
Cllr Ron Hampson, chairman of Flintshire Council’s housing overview and scrutiny committee said: “Hopefully we won’t go back to the bad old days of the £1m bed and breakfast costs we had a few years ago.
“However, it is a tremendous problem and a difficult time for many people.
“I am very concerned about the situation regarding the lack of affordable housing and one-bedroom properties available.
“Flintshire Council does have plans and schemes that could help sort things out and we are hoping to build more affordable properties in the county.”
