ANIMAL rights activists have hit out after it was revealed real animal fur is worn as part of Wrexham Council’s mayoral robes.

The discovery was made after a member of the public commented on a picture of the new Mayor of Wrexham Cllr I David Bithell MBE wearing the robes, which was posted on Facebook by the council.

Under the picture David Wayne Price wrote: “Are the robes real fur?”

Wrexham Council responded by saying: “Asked the mayor’s office and yes they’re real fur and are getting on a bit now.”

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) have slammed the council’s use of fur, describing it as ‘inexcusable’.

A PETA spokesman said: “There is no sound reason for the mayor of Wrexham to continue to use ceremonial robes lined with real fur.

“So strong is our moral objection to cruelly killing animals for their skin, that Parliament passed an act banning fur farming more than a decade ago.

“It is inexcusable and an act of sheer indifference to public opinion for British representatives to wear garments that so conflict with British values.

“We urge the mayor to follow the compassionate example of many other public servants who have requested for their ceremonial robes be lined with faux fur.”

Mr Price has now launched a petition calling on the council to stop using the robes.

Wrexham Council told the Leader there are currently no plans to replace them.

They were also unaware of when the robes were made or what animal the fur came from.

The petition says: “This is a petition to make Wrexham Council realise that it does not need to live in ancient times. In the modern world, there is no need for animals to suffer just for vanity.

“From today, please Wrexham Council, make sure that the mayor wears no real fur.”

A Wrexham Council spokesman said: “We are unaware of when the current robes were made. This council inherited them from the previous Maelor Borough Council.

“There are no plans to replace the robes but should this happen in the future we would not consider using real fur.”

l In May last year the incoming mayor of Colwyn Bay refused to wear the town council’s ceremonial robes because they were made with real animal fur.

Cllr Viv Perry made the decision due to her background of supporting animal welfare.

Instead during her mayoral year Cllr Perry opted to wear a red coat for official ceremonies.

Colwyn Bay Town Council said it couldn’t ask a dressmaker to remove the fur as it doesn’t own the robe, which is officially on loan from the former Colwyn Borough Council which was abolished in 1996.

How absolutely ridiculous, do some people not have anything better to do with their time. Absolutely pathetic waste of the councils time. If they were new robes yes very bad but obviously they're antique.

With so much going on in the world today and Wrexham going down the drain is the Mayor`s robe really important enough to make front page news ?

Looks like this is all the doing of just one self righteous arse who "reported" it to PETA.

Oh yeah.....lets spend tax payers money on replacing them with new robes made from fake fur produced in the sweat shops of Asia...that should satisfy the ethical mind set of their fellow human beings in Peta
