SALTNEY singer Alex Keirl is hoping his appearance on Britain’s Got Talent will lead to a long-term career in the music industry.

The 20-year-old West Cheshire College music student, whose moving rendition of Bring Him Home from the musical Les Miserables brought the audience and two of the judges to their feet, is being tipped as one of the brightest stars of the talent show.

Since his performance last Saturday he has enjoyed a whirlwind of media attention including an appearance on the This Morning show with Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby.

The former Queen’s Park High School pupil who starred in school productions of Grease and We Will Rock You, spoke at his audition about being bullied because of his love of singing. “It was difficult at the time but it did make me a stronger person,” said Alex. “If it hadn’t happened I might not be where I am today.”

He ignored his critics to follow his dream of becoming a singer and has tried out twice for the X-Factor, and for The Voice, but it was Britain’s Got Talent where his talent was finally recognised.

The last time he auditioned for the X Factor he got as far as singing in front of the judges but didn’t get through. “They told me I was too young and I wasn’t ready. Since then I’ve worked on my image and my voice”

Alex says waiting to go on stage for his Britain’s Got Talent audition was nerve-wracking. “I heard the buzzer go off and it was so loud it made me jump. Hearing that added so much pressure. I thought ‘I hope that doesn’t happen to me’.”

Once on stage his nerves disappeared. “When you are out there you don’t have time to be nervous,” he said.

Although Simon Cowell said he thought the song may have been “just a little bit too high” Alex doesn’t regard the comment as being negative. “It was just his opinion of the song.”

After getting his four “yeses” from the judges Alex was euphoric. “It was weird because I don’t think it hit me,” he said. “I was so happy but I was thinking ‘what’s just gone on’?”

Alex, who two years ago won a Chester talent show, writes his own songs and is teaching himself to play guitar and piano.

“My aim is to be in the music industry. To get a deal and release an album,” he said.

After Alex’s performance judge David Walliams said: “That was so beautiful.  You have a stunning voice, but not only have you got a great voice you really interpreted the song.

“I think you’re a fantastic singer and I hope you can go all the way in the competition.”

Alesha Dixon added her support, saying: “That was a great vocal performance. You have a very powerful instrument and a lovely ethereal quality about your voice and you pitched that perfectly. Well done.”

His third ‘yes’ came from Amanda Holden who added: “You landed on every single note and your breath control was extraordinary. It was an outstanding performance.”

Simon said: “I echo what the others said. My only reservation was whether it was just a little bit too high.”

But adding his seal of approval he said: “I can’t deny how talented you are. I’m going to say yes. You’ve got four yeses.”
