A CHARITY is on the lookout for volunteers to make hats for impoverished African children.
Teams 4 U volunteers in Wrexham take the colourful hats to Uganda as part of their charity work.
This includes administering HIV testing programmes, building schools, hosting sports days, arts and crafts sessions, and distributing much needed equipment.
Volunteer Dorothy Watson, from Wrexham, said: “You can see what the hats mean to the children when you see their happy smiling faces.
“They’ve got nothing but they give you everything with their cuddles and their smiles.
“I love going out there. They’re lovely people.”
The knitted beanie hats are the colours of the Ugandan national flag, yellow, black, and red.
Retired nurse Dorothy is part of a knitting group which meets at Manna Christian Bookshop, Charles Street, Wrexham, every Wednesday from 2pm to 4pm.
She said: “It’s a great way to socialise and get people out and about. We have a cup of tea, a natter, and make hats, puppets, scarves and mits.
“There are loads of other knitting groups all over the Wrexham area and in Flintshire. We also take out pencil cases to the children in Uganda.”
Teams 4 U also run projects in Romania, Cambodia, Crimea and Belarus to help children who are disadvantaged through no fault of their own.
They are working with ex-Ugandan international footballer and assistant coach to the national team, Jackson Mayanja, to build a school in the poor rural community of Nangunga.
Grandmother of four Dorothy believes education is of vital importance.
She said: “Education, education, education is the way out of poverty.
“I work to raise awareness in the Wrexham area, so I give talks and presentations to show people what we’re doing.
“There are trips going out to Uganda about four times a year.
“We also collect school uniforms because a lot of children don’t have them out there.
“We need a lot of hats. If people want to send us anything they can drop it off at the Manna Christian Bookshop.
“If they could leave a note saying who they are that would be great because I like to write back to say thank you.
