A DOG lover from Holywell is preparing to embark on a cycling challenge with a difference.
Darren Crosbie is planning to cycle 829 miles in a week in aid of North Clwyd Animal Rescue.
However, his challenge will be different as he will be clocking up the miles on an exercise bike in the gym at the Springfield Hotel, Holywell.
Darren has spent recent years suffering with chronic pancreatitis, leading to him enduring a large number of hospital admissions and having to undergo an operation to have his pancreas removed two years ago.
With his health now improving, Darren, 36, is ready to go the distance and to clock up about 140 miles each day when he takes on the challenge in May.
He said: “It is going to be a big challenge but I am looking forward to it. I hope once I get into the swing of things it will go well.
“There is obviously a lot of miles to cover but I want to raise as much money as possible.
“I am hoping to do 10 hours a day. I am seeking to go 829 miles and have set a target of £1 for every mile covered.
“North Clwyd Animal Rescue has been good for me and I want to give something back.”
The 829 miles will see Darren follow a virtual route taking in North Wales, Mid Wales and part of the North-West, covering areas where North Clwyd Animal Rescue has rehomed animals.
Darren has good reason to support the charity’s work as he knows a dog can be man’s best friend.
Now working and volunteering at the centre, Darren acquired his six-year-old German shepherd Jason from there.
During his illness he was comforted at home by Jason, who has since been joined by another German shepherd, Stella.
Darren wants to help ensure other people can continue to experience the joys of rehoming a dog from the centre.
“When I was ill I found Jason to be a massive help,” he said.
“If I was having a bad day he was there for me.
“I know its a cliche but he really is part of the family. If it hadn’t been for him being here when I was really ill I dont know how I’d have coped.”
